For Jessi Hochstein choosing ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï was more than a practical decision. It was a life-changing experience. After graduating high school in 1996 and completing basic training that summer, Jessi began classes at ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï in January 1997. Initially pursuing a broadcasting major, life and military training led to a change in direction, ultimately finding a home in horticulture.
One of the most impactful aspects of ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï was affordability.
“I walked out of ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï with no debt,” Jessi said. “Thanks to a combination of the GI Bill, tuition assistance, drill pay and careful savings, completing a degree without student loans was not only possible, it was empowering. “Even with four years, being able to graduate debt-free was such a good feeling.”
Beyond financial freedom, ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï provided invaluable resources and support. From job assistance to approachable instructors, the college offered a welcoming environment. “When I switched my major, everyone was helpful. It never felt intimidating.”
When asked about her favorite memory of ºÚÁϳԹÏ, the Ag Building stands out for Jessi.
“It felt like a small town, friendly and full of connections. We grew mums and poinsettias together in horticulture classes. It sounds simple, but those projects built friendships I still have today.”
Although Jessi did not pursue a career directly in horticulture, the skills and discipline gained at ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï proved essential. After 14 years at Menards and roles with the local chamber of commerce and hospital in Wayne, Jessi eventually embraced entrepreneurship. In 2022, she opened her own business after graduating from the College of Hair Design in Lincoln.
“College taught me discipline. Opening a business takes hard work and commitment. You have to be married to it.”
Jessi offers this advice to future ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï students and graduates:
“Do not overlook ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï just because it is local. It is an amazing school with incredible resources and people who truly care. Even if you do not work in your exact field, the education and experience will serve you well.”
Today, Jessi and her husband, Nick, who also owns a business, enjoy a busy and fulfilling life with family, five granddaughters and a shared motto: work hard, play hard. From tailgating to reading, life is full, and it all started with a strong foundation at ºÚÁϳԹÏ.
